The New Jerusalem – Ether 13:10-12

10 And then cometh the New Jerusalem; and blessed are they who dwell therein, for it is they whose garments are white through the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who are numbered among the remnant of the seed of Joseph, who were of the house of Israel.
11 And then also cometh the Jerusalem of old; and the inhabitants thereof, blessed are they, for they have been washed in the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who were scattered and gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the north countries, and are partakers of the fulfilling of the covenant which God made with their father, Abraham.
12 And when these things come, bringeth to pass the scripture which saith, there are they who were first, who shall be last; and there are they who were last, who shall be first.
When the Savior appeared to the Nephites and Lamanites, He told them that their land would one day be a New Jerusalem, which would enable Him to fulfill the covenant He made with their ancestors (3 Nephi 20:22). He also clarified that the Gentiles would help the descendants of Jacob to build this city and would be numbered among them (3 Nephi 21:23).
Hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Ether testified that the New Jerusalem would come down from heaven (Ether 13:3) and also that it would be built on earth (Ether 13:5-6). This is similar to Joseph Smith’s statement that, in the last days, the kingdom of God in heaven will come down to meet the kingdom of God on earth (D&C 65:5-6).
I like the fact that both the New Jerusalem and the original Jerusalem will be inhabited by people who have been sanctified by the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It’s not that the Gentiles will replace the Jews as the covenant people of the Lord. Rather, all who are willing to accept the covenant, regardless of their history, will be welcomed into the fold of God.
I am grateful that the plan of salvation provides opportunities for all of God’s children to be cleansed from sin and to inherit His greatest blessings. I will remember that there is no place for self-righteousness among His disciples. There are those who do not follow God today but who will later accept His gospel, be cleansed by the Atonement, and receive all of the blessings promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
