He Will Take Upon Him… – Alma 7:11-13

11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.

Alma lists three things which the Savior took upon Himself during His mortal life and tells us what He accomplished with each one:
He will take upon him…
That He may…
Death
Loose the bands of death
Their infirmities
Know how to succor His people
The sins of His people
Blot out their transgressions

I’m grateful for all three kinds of deliverance which we receive from the Savior, and I must admit, in all three cases, I don’t entirely understand how it is possible:

  • Because the Savior willingly laid down His life and then took it up again, we will all be resurrected and will live again after we die. Why does His resurrection enable our resurrection? I don’t know. But I’m grateful for the promise that I, and the people I love, will live again after death.
  • By subjecting Himself to mortal life, the Savior experienced personally the hardships we face: pains, afflictions, temptations, sicknesses, infirmities. As an omniscient God, why did He have to experience those things in order to know how to succor us? I don’t know. But my confidence in Him is stronger, knowing that He has personally experienced the challenges of mortal life.
  • He paid the price for our sins. How can this be? As Amulek points out, “there is not any man that can sacrifice his own blood which will atone for the sins of another…. Therefore there can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the world” (Alma 34:11-12). I understand that I can’t pay for another person’s sins. Why, then, can the Savior pay for mine? I don’t know. But I have felt the relief of having my guilt “swept away” after sincerely repenting of my sins, and I am grateful that He has made it possible.

Today, I will remember the gifts I receive through the Atonement of Jesus Christ: a promise of resurrection, support through my trials, and the ability overcome my sins and be forgiven.
