He Must Needs Have Charity – Moroni 7:43-44

43 And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.
44 If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity.
I think the message of these verses is simply this: faith, hope, humility, and charity are a package deal. This is not an a la carte menu, where you can choose to have, say, faith and hope but not humility or charity. These qualities are so tightly coupled that we can’t really develop one without the others, or at least to possess some but not all of these qualities is pointless.
I’m particularly concerned with the role of charity in these verses. Without charity, Mormon says, we are nothing. We can strive to exercise faith and to be consistently hopeful, but if we don’t help and serve the people around us, those efforts are useless.
Today, I will pay attention to the needs of the people around me and will serve others to the best of my ability, remembering that, without charity, I am nothing.
