I Remembered Also to Have Heard My Father – Alma 36:17-19

17 And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.
18 Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.
19 And now, behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more; yea, I was harrowed up by the memory of my sins no more.
(Alma 36:17-19)
One of the hard things about parenting is that the results of our efforts may not be visible for many years. Just like Enos, Alma the Younger was able to recall important truths his father had taught for many years. I wonder how many times Alma’s father had taught and testified of the Atonement with no apparent effect on his son. But in a later time of crisis, Alma was able to draw upon his father’s teachings and apply the Atonement to receive the healing he so desperately needed.
Today, I will remember that the lessons I’m teaching my children today may be useful to them in the future. I will not become discouraged if the response is unenthusiastic. I will give them the best advice I can, knowing that it may be more valuable to them than is immediately evident.
