That They Might Enter into the Rest of the Lord – Alma 13:16

16 Now these ordinances were given after this manner, that thereby the people might look forward on the Son of God, it being a type of his order, or it being his order, and this that they might look forward to him for a remission of their sins, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord.

In this passage, Alma combines three principles:

  1. The ordinances of the gospel teach us the order of God.
  2. Participation in the ordinances leads us to the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and to a remission of our sins.
  3. Coming to the Savior and having our sins washed away enables us to “enter into the rest of the Lord.”
As I’ve pondered these principles, I’ve learned more about why it is important to attend the temple regularly. The temple is a place of peace not only because it is quiet and non-contentious, but because it leads us to the Savior. As we participate in the ordinances, we can receive a remission of our sins which frees us from internal disharmony and agitation. As our sins are removed, we can be at peace, not only with the people around us, but within ourselves.
Today, I will be thankful for the ordinances associated with the temple, which teach me the order of God and enable me to receive the grace of Jesus Christ in order to have true peace in my heart.
